A Rising Tide?

Written By: Josh Kimbrell.

“There is a tide in the affairs of men.” – (Julius Caesar, Act-4, Scene-3).

Those famous words from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar have always haunted my heart as I read the rolling headlines of our day. Those words, written at the height of the Renaissance, are as accurate today as they were in Elizabethan England. There is, indeed, a tide in the affairs of men which, like the tide of the ocean, is cyclical. The ebb and flow of this human tide has determined the destiny of nations, the reign of rulers, and the presence of prosperity. This tide is the tide of Truth which, when flowing, favors freedom and, when ebbing, brings desolation.

"Beware the ides of March"

Few classrooms focus on the rise and fall of Athens, the glory and doom of Rome, or the role of faith in the development of freedom and free markets. Nevertheless, these historical events and trends have shaped our lives so profoundly that the consequences affect us daily. Though there are many details and nuances, the major theme of the past 2,000 years of human history tells the story: when man believes there’s a God, he prospers. When man believes he is God, he is destroyed. The Athenians and the Romans scaled the heights of political prosperity and economic affluence. They did so because they believed in the concept of natural law, which is given by Deity, and secures the rights of all citizens. Most notable among the ancient statesmen is Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman Governor, who believed that all human law must be based on God’s law.

Cicero, in his genius, grasped the principle that defines free societies: nations must be states of law that transcend men. In short, any nation which based its law on Divine Revelation (i.e. – the Ten Commandments, and the rights to life and liberty) would flourish in freedom. By contrast, any nation which made up law as it went would suffer the fate of fools, and be relegated to the ash-heap of history. Cicero, before the Roman Senate, told a story of robbers who, by virtue of an elected “legislature of thieves,” voted that it was no longer illegal to steal. He went on to say that any free citizen would call this preposterous, until they realized that their own government was doing much the same.

My friend, the spirit of America, indeed of South Carolina, is based on the belief that government is set-up to preserve the natural rights of men. Unfortunately, politicians on both sides of the political aisle have taken to creating of “legislature of thieves,” which attempts to justify their thievery by voting it virtuous. The “tide in the affairs of men” is rolling, and it will be the determination of our time that we are one nation under God, not one nation under men. The tide of human history favors freedom, and that tide is shaped by the belief that “blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”

America can, at its best, be summed-up in one word: LIBERTY.

It’s Healthcare or the Highway

By Dr. Tony Beam.

Never have so many done so much to accomplish something that so few want. That about sums up the Obama Administration obsession to ram the so-called healthcare reform package through a reluctant Congress. Republicans are united in their opposition and the President’s own party has to be bought off, roughed up, or talked down to in order to bring them in line. The limits of reconciliation in the Senate is forcing the Obama Administration to go for broke in the House. If somehow, Nancy Pelosi and Rahm Emanuel can get enough democrat representatives to agree to fall on their swords and vote for passage of the Senate bill, reconciliation will be a moot point. All that has to happen is for the House to pass the Senate bill without amendments. It would then go straight to the President’s desk where he would sign into law the largest, most bitterly partisan bill in history…a bill that has been soundly rejected by majority after majority in poll after poll.

How did an Administration that promised to move “beyond politics” and “unite the county” end up being so partisan with a bitterly divided country? It’s really not that hard to understand. For nine months leading up to the mid-term elections of 2006 I tried to get as many people as I could to realize we were about to turn the county over to hardcore leftwing ideologues. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Steny Hoyer, and the rest of the democrat leadership are all committed to as much government control as the country will tolerate. Candidate Obama ran as a moderate, a centrist, who promised to avoid the partisan divides of the past and bring the country to a place of broad consensus on a host of issues. The rhetoric of the campaign quickly gave way to the reality of governing. President Obama bore almost no resemblance to candidate Obama. He began governing from the Left from day one, promising to fix our broken economy by mortgaging the prosperity of future generations by piling up an unprecedented mountain of debt, all while increasing the size and scope of the federal government.

Americans were shocked by the $767 billion price tag of the stimulus package but the administration was young so many people were willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Then came the takeover of General Motors and the bailout of Chrysler. Then President Obama presented and democrats passed a $3.53 trillion budget that is guaranteed to add $1.2 trillion to the national debt by the end of this fiscal year.

By the summer, the grassroots response to the Obama Administration’s runaway spending had blossomed into a serious rebellion among the electorate. Congress went home in August to face overwhelming opposition to the President’s healthcare plan. Town hall meetings, that were supposed to be opportunities for democrats to tout the President’s healthcare plan turned into raucous roasts as Americans sent a clear message that they believed their government was out of touch and out of control.

(Editor’s Note: The photo above shows only a tiny fraction of the large crowd that attended this event. At the time this photo was taken, around 1:00 p.m., Pennsylvania Avenue was still jammed completely, and the mall was packed from the Capitol Building past the Washington Monument. See aerial photos here.)

On September 12, hundreds of thousands of protestors showed up in Washington calling for an end to healthcare reform but the President and his majority party were not in the mood to listen. First, they tried to ignore the Tea Party protestors hoping the mainstream media would follow their lead and leave the Tea Party with no place to go. When that didn’t work, the administration tried to vilify the movement by calling it an “Astroturf” movement funded by special interests like “big Pharmaceuticals” and “big insurance companies.” Last summer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the Tea Party movement “un-American” and accused them of using Nazi symbols. But in a recent interview with Elizabeth Vargas on ABC’s This Week, Pelosi, speaking about the Tea Party movement said, “Some of it is hijacking the good intentions of lots of people who share some of our concerns that we have about the role of special interests.” I must assume Pelosi’s strategy now is if you can’t beat the Tea Party movement just hijack it and make is sound like your idea.

The latest shoe to drop in the healthcare or highway effort by the White House comes from Congressman Eric Massa (D-NY), who is being investigated by the House ethics committee for allegedly making inappropriate comments to a staffer on New Year’s Eve. Massa announced his resignation on Friday saying, “This administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this heath care bill. And now they’ve gotten rid of me, and it will pass. You connect the dots.”

On Sunday, Nancy Pelosi accused Republicans of slowing trying to block healthcare reform. Yet it was fellow democrats Sen. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Sen. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana who demanded the “cornhusker kickback’ and the Louisiana Purchase” in order to secure their votes.

The question is why? Why is the President and the Democrat leadership so determined to have healthcare or the highway? The answer is simple. They really believe they know what is best for the American people. And they are willing to go to any lengths and to walk over the will of the people to get their way.

You Lie… and you sin!

Written by Samuel Lawrence

The television show, “The X-Files” (1993-2002) had a catchphrase that said “The Truth IS Out There.”  Well, thanks to the Internet, the truth is not only out there, you can actually have it delivered to your desktop, laptop, and even your cell phone.

The current hot topic in Washington DC is the pending Government takeover of America’s healthcare, including public funding of abortions, hefty taxes on the middle class, forced coverage with fines for those not covered, and many other massive regulations, government intrusion into privacy, and the inevitable rationing of care that comes with every single socialized healthcare plan currently on the planet.

Our President promised his “sheeple” who got him elected “hope and change” but what they really got was “bait and switch.”  Here is a video by one of his faithful who are now realizing, too late, the ugly truth about the man from Chicago and his arm twisting henchmen.

Evidently, the “end justifies the means” to the current regime heading the Executive and Legislative branches of our Federal government.  It is astonishing to hear Nancy Pelosi defend and explain her twisted “moral” justification for abortion, which is nothing but pure Secular Humanism, nothing more, nothing less. Watch the video and decide for yourself.

To further demonstrate that this Liberal bunch of Socialists will do anything to push their agenda down the throats of America, listen to both the President and Speaker Nancy Pelosi lie through their teeth regarding public funding for abortions in the current Senate Healthcare bill that the President is STRONGLY urging the House to vote for.  Notice the smirk on both their faces as they talk down to the masses from their lofty “bully pulpits.”

(Many thanks to Cory Truax for the above video link.)

Obama’s message of “Hope and Change” has devolved into “Bait and Switch.”  The only hope America has for any meaningful change in the November 2010 election.  I hope and pray that the Lord will have mercy upon America, but this “power grabbing,” “freedom stealing” administration has more the appearance of divine judgement on a nation which has turned its back on the Lord, than just your average bunch of Liberals gone wild.

The Lord blesses nations and brings curses and loss of freedom to those who reject Him. The Bible says in Psalm 33:10-12 that

“The LORD foils the plans of the nations; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.”

Consider Deuteronomy 30:1-7 in which the Lord speaks to the Children of Israel (His Chosen people) through Moses:

“I have told you everything the Lord your God will do for you, and I’ve also told you the curses he will put on you if you reject him. He will scatter you in faraway countries, but when you realize that he is punishing you, return to him with all your heart and soul and start obeying the commands I have given to you today. Then he will stop punishing you and treat you with kindness. He may have scattered you to the farthest countries on earth, but he will bring you back to the land that had belonged to your ancestors and make you even more successful and powerful than they ever were. You and your descendants are stubborn, but the Lord will make you willing to obey him and love him with all your heart and soul, and you will enjoy a long life. Then the Lord your God will remove the curses from you and put them on those enemies who hate and attack you.”

If the Lord God of Heaven promises this judgement to his chosen people, His elect, what more can a heathen and reprobate nation, overwhelmingly consumed with debauchery, hedonism and humanism, expect? Until America returns to the moral Judeo-Christian teachings she was founded upon, and repent from the chronic sin consuming her, we cannot expect the blessings of God, nor the liberty and freedom we once had, that made us great.

(1) “John Adams, had this principle in mind when he wrote, ‘Our Constitution was made for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.‘   Likewise, William Penn noted, ‘If we will not be governed by God, then we must be governed by tyrants.’ Yet, the nation ceased being a moral people. It ceased recognizing God. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Constitution, which allowed for a tremendous amount of liberty and granted few powers to the government, is now essentially a relic.”

I believe what we are witnessing  is this: we are now reaping the harvest of decades of sin.  America… Bless God!

Everlasting Grace

Written by James A. Frost

Yes, the same heart that did on
Calvary bleed,
Still stretches forth His hand
when we are on the edge of our
need.
Always between us, and whatever
circumstance or foe,
Inseparably linked, a child can
always to His Father go.
When we are God’s without
reserve,
Resolved in our hearts that
no other will we serve,
when in utter odedience we
will only what He wills,
We are content in every state
as our hearts He fills.
All trials and temptations are
victoriously met,
His strength becomes ours, if
Him we do not forget,
Every situation is only an
opportunity to confirm my trust.
In the infinity of His grace my
troubles are as a speck of dust.

Hold On

Written by James A. Frost

When it seems thy soul is tossed
about upon the raging briny deep,
Hold on, and remember you are in
God’s Keep.
Thy time’s burst of dawn will come,
Hold on,
His strength is ours, when ours
is gone.
Thy parched desert shall know His
watering, when,
without reserve, we look up and
ask Him to come in.
Hold on, for His own glory is thy
valley, we walk triumph’s way.
It is in our darkest hour that
His love emits its brightest ray.
Through sorrow God is only
enlarging thee.
So hold on, and know the majestic
sweep of eternity.

Isaiah 26:3 says “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” It is not easy to hold on in times of despair and trial.  It is a challenge. It tests your faith.  But the words of my father-in-law come as a loving reminder that, when we face dark times, the Lord is our refuge and our hope.

So, hold on to Jesus Christ, when trials come.

Blessings,

Sam Lawrence
