This weekend America will be celebrating her Independence from the tyranical British Government that governed its citizens in America in the 1700′s. On July 4, 1776, the unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America pronounced its freedom from the government which was abusing its citizenry. And for the support of that Declaration of Independance, and “with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,” these men mutually pledged to each other their Lives, their Fortunes, and their sacred Honor (Adapted from the closing of the Declaration of Independance). It was the beginning of a free republic whose freedom lasted unfettered until the creeping in of socialism in the 1900′s and has spread like cancer across the Fruited Plains in the past two decades.
Today the great American Dream of freedom is being turned into a nightmare by the Socialists who are leading our nation today. Under the banner of “spreading the wealth” around, as told to “Joe the Plumber,” our leaders are taking America to the poorhouse that Socialism inevitably brings to any nation. There are no examples of wealthy Socialist nations on the planet. Socialism does not generate wealth, it confiscates it, except for the “ruling elite,” and grants equal poverty to everyone else.
Free enterprise capitalism does generate wealth. Capitalism was the vehicle that made the USA the richest country on the planet. Entrepreneurs blossomed and mushroomed under capitalism and the “rising tide” of capitalism lifted all the ships in the harbor. In other words, capitalists provided jobs and improved the standard of living for all those willing to work. Free markets and capitalism brought the United States the most affluence of any nation on earth. Even our poorest lived better than the majority of the global population.
Nevertheless, today, we see an America where the Protestant work ethic is passing into history and is being replaced by an entitlement mentality that looks to government to provide for you, rather than you providing for yourself. That is why we now have forced government heathcare on the books, thanks to our Democratic Socialist leaders. That is why the Federal government is being allowed to take over Wall Street and the banking industry, and has now poised itself to take over any segment of our society it desires. Many Americans have bought the liberal media socialist propaganda “hook, line, and sinker.” It is also why our Bill of Rights are being supplanted by Humanistic Socialist laws like the so-called “hate crimes” legislation and constant attacks on the First and Second Amendments. It is also why the Tenth Amendment of state’s rights are being trampled by an ever encroaching Federal Government.
America was built and made great by God fearing, freedom loving men and women who loved freedom more than life itself, because they believed they were “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Our liberties were purchased in 1776 by great freedom loving Americans like Samuel Adams, American Patriot & Politician (1722 – 1803) who said “If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” Regarding the impending Revolutionary War to purchase freedom from government tyranny, a patriot named Patrick Henry made these comments in March 23, 1775, “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!”
These patriotic quotes of yesteryear seem foreign to the America we live in today. Had these two men lived today, they would no doubt be watched closely by the Department of Homeland Security. If you think we still live in the “land of the free” then consider what freedoms our govenrment has already stolen from “we the people.” President Ronald Reagan understood freedom and how goverments work to steal it. Ben Franklin is quoted as saying “Every generation needs a revolution.” Unfortunately, I fear today we would not see a nation built on Christian principles of morality, as was the one birthed by the Declaration of Independence, but rather a more tyrannical and ungodly one than we currently have. The Psalmist understood perfectly where the blessings of liberty originate when he penned these words in Psalm 33:12 “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!” Indeed America has been blessed by Almighty God, but as we sink further into being a nation of ungodly secularists and we see the blessings of God drying up and our freedoms being taken away.
The answer this Independence Day, for all Christ followers, is the same one that was there in the beginning of this great nation: “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14). It is past time for America to Bless God if we ever hope to see God Bless America again.
