Do you understand about the loaves?

Read Mark 6:45-52

“They didn’t understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.” (verse 52)

The problem with the disciples at this point was not that they had not seen God’s power at work, but they did not yet understand what it all meant. You see when God does a miracle He is looking to do more than amaze you or meet your need. He is looking to reveal something of himself to you. Apparently the disciples, having previously seen Jesus feed the multitudes with a few loaves and two fish, weren’t getting the point of Jesus’ power. It says in verse 52 “They didn’t understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened.” That can happen to us. We can miss the point of His power.

When we see a miracle but don’t take time to allow its meaning to sink into our hearts and show us who Jesus is, when we take the miracle and run without really listening to God’s voice in the midst of it, then we become hard hearted. We sink down to the level of just wanting Jesus to give us experiences without growing closer to him in the process. Then when we find ourselves caught on the lake in the middle of the night with the winds of difficulty blowing against us, we don’t recognize Jesus when he comes through the storm to save us. The disciples thought their savior was a ghost because they didn’t really know him for who he was. The feeding of the 5000 had not yet made its crucial journey from head to heart in other words. Every day God is doing miracles for those who will believe. When you experience the miraculous power of God make sure you allow it to do its complete work in your life. Let it reveal to you the heart of God.

Challenge: Spend some time thinking about all the miracles God has done in your past. What do they show you about him? Are you walking in the truth of yesterdays miracles?
