Read Mark 6:53-56
People came out of the woodwork. Once word spread about Jesus’ amazing power they came running. Everybody who had a need for healing or deliverance came reaching for the fringe of his robe. As it says; “that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.” (v.56) What a powerful and loving savior we have who can heal us with just a brush of his robe.
You know they didn’t have to do much to get healed. It says all they did was touch the edge of his robe. No questions to answer. No applications to fill out. No contacting the HMO to be sure they were covered. They weren’t even required to join his ministry or become financial partners. All they had to do was touch the edge of his robe as he walked by. I have to wonder though, how many of those people actually got to know Jesus?
How many of them moved beyond the fringe of his robe and came into contact with the person who would soon die for them? We can only speculate as to how many became born again followers. What a sad thing to imagine those who touched his robe in a time of need but never turned from their sins and found eternal life. How many who had felt his healing touch but never repented of their sins heard their healer say,”Depart from me I never knew you.” at the end of life?
Sadly many people today claim to have had a miracle or two in their lives but never move beyond the fringe of a past experience to find the savior. They die in their sins because they have nothing more of Jesus than a brief encounter with the miraculous. What we have to understand is that a miracle is not meant to be an end in itself. A touch from the Lord is an invitation to come closer. It is meant to be a doorway into a saving relationship with the master of our souls. Jesus calls us to walk with him along the road as His disciples. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23) Are you following him today? Are you moving beyond the fringe and letting him change more than your circumstances? Today if you have to look back in your past to find Jesus at work in your life he is calling you closer. Don’t rest on the miracles of the past, move forward in real commitment to the master. Move beyond the fringe and find real life.
