The Gift of Freedom

(Dedicated to our veterans)

The greatest monument we could construct to our veterans is that of a free and strong America. Perpetuity is the highest form of compliment to those brave souls who risked everything to ensure that the blessings of liberty. Over the past twenty-four months, America’s leaders have taken us down a careening path of disastrous deficits, expansive government and dwindling opportunities in our Country. This is not only a slap in the face to those who braved death to defeat foes of freedom, but a very present danger to our Nation.

Last week the American people resoundingly rejected this failed notion of national decline. Though our Country is faced with profound challenges, the like of which we’ve not seen in our lifetime, these challenges aren’t insurmountable. We must recommit ourselves to the faith of our fathers, to ensure peace for our posterity. In the book of Deuteronomy, our Lord instructs His people, “you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow; you shall reign over many nations, but they shall not rule over you.” My friends, for the first time in my lifetime, the great economic challenges facing our people have now become one with our spiritual challenge.

In order to overcome our economic woes, we must overcome our apathy to Truth. America, as Alexis De Tocqueville once styled it, “is a nation with the soul of a church.” So fervent was our commitment to freedom, it was nearly a religious conviction. In actuality, America has always been a deeply religious nation. Not religious in some obscurely faithful fashion, but deeply committed to the Judeo-Christian heritage which gave us birth.

This Veterans’ Day, let’s pledge to rebuild America for our children. Let’s fight to leave them a better nation than we inherited. Then, we will have fulfilled the Lord’s command to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” and honored the sacrifice of millions who have fought for freedom.

God Bless America,
