Read Acts 2:2
“It filled the entire house where they were sitting.”
The Holy Spirit came upon a sitting church. They were sitting, not in lethargy but in expectancy. We often tell our churches not to sit around doing nothing, but to be hard at work for the master. But there is a type of sitting that we, in all our productivity, have lost sight of. It is like what King David did when he needed God’s counsel. “He sat before the Lord” awaiting his help and direction. I think one of the reasons revival tarries is that we are in such a holy hurry to accomplish our visions for the Lord that we wouldn’t have time for a move of God if one came.
Think about what would happen if the Lord wanted to move upon a Sunday morning congregation at 11:45. What if God wanted to break in during the announcements? We would be so busy marking our calendars that we would not have room for God to speak to us. The disciples met the Spirit because they were sitting in his presence.
Don’t keep yourself in the delusion that you have more urgent demands on your life than the first century believers had. Their whole existence was filled with the daily chores of survival. Just maintaining enough food and water, making clothes, traveling from chore to chore, task to task was enough to fill any day. Think about this. If you spend time in prayer you might miss a ball game or a television show. If they took time for prayer they might miss a meal or lose livestock or not have enough supplies for the day. Talk about sacrifice!
These folks put aside much more in order to sit before the Lord than we could imagine in our own lives today. They sat before the Lord, not because they had nothing else to do, but because they believed the sacrifice was worth experiencing God. Do you and I? Are we willing to sit before the Lord while our need to be entertained by our luxuries is put on hold? Or will we keep telling ourselves that the world cannot go on if we miss a televised ball game just to meet with God? We overcome the obstacle of motion when we make the decision to sit expectantly seeking the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Take some time to sit in His presence. Hey you’re already here, so why not now?
