God Bless America?

Written by Mark Driskill:

Read Acts 3:19-26

“God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

The road to God’s blessing often includes the call to repentance, or change in direction. Peter told the listener’s that God was going to “bless you by turning…you from your wickedness.”

We all want God’s blessing but are we willing to do whatever it takes to become blessable? We become all misty eyed whenever we hear someone sing or say, “God bless America.” But do we really know what we’re asking? I love my country but there are just some things in our culture that God cannot and will not bless. Nevertheless God loves this country and wants to bless it.

So in order to do so he first calls us to repentance. When you think about it every time God calls a people to repent that is a way of inviting that people into God’s blessing. God says to us, “I have great blessings for you America but first you must turn from your wickedness so you can be blessable.” God will not bless unbridled corporate greed, or unfettered immorality, nor can God bless the commercialism of the gospel that characterizes our culture. Yet we all want God to bless America. I believe God has a great love for this country as for all countries.

I believe we have yet to see the blessing God wants to pour out on any people who will turn to him with all their hearts. Let us pray that God will bless America and that America will seek to become blessable
