Watch out for the Cute Furry Ones

Read Acts 6:1-7

“we will give our attention to prayer and ministry of the word.”

Years ago I had a dream. I was standing inside of a church reading the word and preparing to preach. A visitor came in and said, “Mark go outside and look at my pet. It will just take a minute.” I went out and found a cute little furry creature looking up at me.  I went over to pet the little thing.  I thought it would only take a minute but when I reached out to touch the harmless looking animal it took hold of me and would not let me go.

At first I thought it was just being playful so I played around with it but after awhile I realized it was not going to let me get away. Its grip became tighter and tighter. I simply could not get away. Before long I was so caught up in the fight that I totally forgot about the chapel, the word and preparing to preach. I don’t remember how the dream ended but I got the point very clearly. Usually when the enemy wants to pry us away from prayer and the word he will use the seemingly “harmless” distractions.

If we are not careful we will wander away from our primary calling to pray and minister the word and find ourselves totally caught up in a good thing, so that we miss out on a God thing. The Apostles avoided this. When dissention broke out in the church over food distribution they didn’t go into “referee mode” and try to fix it. The kept their focus, delegated the job to people who could handle it, and stuck to their primary calling, Prayer and ministry of the word of God.  This enabled the church to grow, the problem to be solved, and made room for a mighty man of faith, named Stephen to find his calling. Are you walking in your calling today?

Are you staying focused on your mission?  Or are you letting cute little furry obligations tear you away from the work of the kingdom?
