Read Acts 6:8-15
“and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.”
One minute you’re handing out potatoes to widows and the next you’re making history for the kingdom of God. Funny how that works isn’t it? Stephen was picked, along with six other men to serve tables so the apostles could minister and pray. But somehow as he moved about faithfully doing his menial tasks people began to notice something. They began to see a powerful faith bubbling underneath the surface of this humble servant of God.
How he went from passing out potatoes to debating with the Jews only God knows. How he began manifesting signs and wonders we can’t be sure. It’s quite likely that as he ministered to the widows he found himself praying for them in their sickness and began to see miracles. We really don’t know how his ministry of food delivery exploded into so much more. What we do know is that as this man went about doing what he was assigned to do signs, wonders, and wisdom began to flow out of his life so that he found himself on the front lines of the move of God in that hour.
It seems that his obedience in handing out food became the doorway through which God opened up other gifts. I wonder what would have happened if Stephen had refused to hand out food. I wonder what would have happened if he had refused saying, “Oh no! I have a vision for a healing ministry. I want to do signs and wonders and use my gifts in debate! Sorry guys I am just way too important to be a grocery boy.” Who knows? Surely God would have gotten the job done regardless. We can only speculate about how God would have done it with or without Stephen. One thing is for sure when we are obedient in the seemingly small things we just never know what God may have in store for us just around the corner. Our obedience in the mundane is often a doorway into the miraculous.
Today put your whole heart into whatever God calls you to do, because you just never know…
