Standing on the Promises or sitting on the Premises?

Read Acts 10:5-8

“he told them everything that had happened and sent them to Joppa.”

What are you doing with the word of the Lord? When Cornelius heard from this angel he immediately began to act in accordance with the message. Sometimes when we are seeking the Lord, in his grace he gives us a word of promise or instruction. When that happens it is a temptation to simply bask in the glow of an powerful encounter with the Holy one. But that is not the purpose of it.

Whenever God reveals his word to you the only appropriate response is the obedience of faith. Has God promised you a great ministry?  Wonderful, now get out there and start preparing and practicing.  Has God promised to heal your marriage?  Fantastic!  Start living toward your spouse in a new way now, as if it were already healed.  Has God promised revival to your church? Then begin to walk in the reality of that promise. Press in and pursue it as God leads.  Begin to ask the Lord for the step of faith he wants you to take.  Oh yes, when God makes a promise there is almost always a step of faith or act of obedience attached to it.

How tragic it would have been if Cornelius, upon hearing from the angel, had simply gone home and sat around reflecting on what the angel looked like, and how he felt in its presence. Or worse what if he had decided to create a doctrine of how angels speak to you? Some, upon hearing from God totally miss the point of the revelation. God doesn’t reveal himself to you so you can create a new doctrine or boast about another spiritual experience. Whenever God reveals himself, through his word, or circumstances, dreams, whatever, it is his invitation for you to take a step of faith.

Many wonder why God has stopped revealing himself to them. They look back on days when God was speaking clearly and powerfully. But lately they haven’t heard a thing. They wonder why God isn’t saying anything new. Perhaps the answer is simple. God is waiting for you to act on the last word he gave you. Why should God tell me something new when I’m not obeying what he already told me months, even years ago? Today ask yourself this. What am I doing with the last thing God told me? How long am I going to wait before I act in faith?
