The Mountain of the Lord

Read Micah 4:1
“and it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills: and peoples shall flow to it…”

I love living in the mountains. Every now and then I get a chance to walk around in the woods up and down the many hills and valleys although it doesnt take long to wear myself out with all the climbing. The danger of hiking in the East Kentucky mountians is that it can become an endless maze of hills and you can find yourself disoriented. It can be really frustrating if I climb a hill only to discover I climbed the wrong one, or that there is yet another still higher to climb. I think that is a good picture of our culture.

We have clawed and scraped our way to the top of wealth and power thinking we were climbing the heights of achievement. But at the end of the day with hands and feet bloodied by crisis, and out of breath from exhaustion, we are finding that we have climbed the wrong hill. Instead of coming to the summit of a brave new world we have wandered deeper into the forest of moral and spiritual confusion. We have been climbing what we thought was the highest peak, only to discover ther is one much higher. The mountain of God.

I believe a day is coming when we will realize that the greatest pursuit in life is the pursuit of God. For too long we have treated the church as an unwanted stepchild while we doted on the american dream. I believe as we continue to feel our culture sliding down the worn out hills of pleasure and power many will look to the mountain of the house of the Lord for healing and hope. We will give up our frantic scraping and clawing up the molehills of personal ambition and finally begin to walk the beautiful pathway of faith hope and love. Jesus said, “come to me all of you who are weary, and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This is his invitation to turn from the exhausting labor of climbing our own hills, begin the ascent to real peace and fulfillment through Jesus Christ.
