Born Again to be Wild

Read Ephesians 2:6

“and seated us in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…”

One of my earliest childhood memories is about my uncle Don.  Before I was old enough to ride a bicycle he would place me on the back of his motorcycle and ride me around the block. It was so cool. I could feel the engine whining under me and the wind blowing in my face while “Born to be Wild” played in the background of my little preschool mind.

In those few moments I was transformed from little to Mark to the baddest guy in town. Watch out world! I thought my uncle Don was pretty cool and when I sat behind him on his bike I was pretty cool too. I didn’t have to drive. I just hung on tight and enjoyed the ride knowing that he would take me with him wherever he was going.  This makes me think of the believers position in Christ.

Paul tells us that when we were dead in our sins God made us alive together with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms. We struggle most in our walk with Jesus when we forget where we are with him. Sadly too many Christians are hoping one day they if they pray enough, read the Bible enough, and do enough good deeds they will finally be in good standing with Jesus.

What they fail to see, and we often forget, is that our salvation depends, not on what we do, but on what Jesus has done. Through the cross I am reconciled to God completely and seated with him in the heavenly realms. (see 2 Corinthians 5 and Colossians 2 for more on this.) Being seated with Christ means we share in all that God the father has given him. We walk in the same father- child relationship with the father that Christ had on this earth. We walk in the same authority and power he had. We have access to everything Jesus had on this earth because he has picked us up and placed us on his seat of power by his grace. In other words “as he is so are we in this world.”

It would have been impossible for me to drive my Uncle Don’s motorcycle if he had just handed me the keys. I couldn’t have even turned the key. It was his bike but he seated me with him. My job was simple. Hold on tight, trust the driver, and enjoy the ride. Today as you go out on the highway remember you aren’t the one in control You are seated with Christ. You are identified with him in the heavenly realms. Whatever happens today remember to hold on tight to Jesus, trust his power, and enjoy the ride. He wants to take you to some pretty cool places today.
