Who are you trying to fool?

Read Ephesians 4:25

“having put away falsehood.”

Make a decision today to put away falsehood. This vain world, working in concert with our own sinful nature has made liars out of all of us. We’ve learned how to shade the truth or even push it aside altogether to suit our goals. We can lie to our neighbors under the pretense of being polite, or tactful when what we really want is to avoid telling the truth and living with the consequences. If we aren’t lying with our words we are posing as something we are not in order to be accepted.

We try to appear more intelligent, more moral, and even more humble than we truly are. We have become so adept at posing in order to impress those around us and have been doing it for so long that most of us don’t even recognize ourselves behind all the facades we live behind. We are so skilled at falsehoods that we no longer know ourselves for who we really are. This is not the way of Jesus. With Jesus what you see is what you get. He does not accept the flattery of people so you never see him attempting to cater to their agendas.

Jesus has such an awareness of the love of the father that he feels no need to pose or pretend for anyone else. This quality of complete transparency is part of his goal for the one who would follow him. Today seek to be more transparent so that the light of Christ may shine through you unhindered. Put away exaggerations. Be done with half truths. Cast out pretentious excuses and explanations. Begin this journey by being transparent with God. Come to him without games. Be who you are in his presence. He doesn’t want your imitation of someone else and He isn’t fooled by your pretentious words.

There is a difference, for example, between praise and flattery. In flattery I attempt to butter God up with pious words in hopes of getting what I want from him. But praise is an authentic expression of genuine love and adoration, for its own sake. As you seek this kind of transparency with God you will find it becoming a reality in all your relationships. So put away falsehoods today and determine that you would rather break a heart than betray a soul. Then the light will have a clear portal to shine through. Be blessed today.
