Meditation #3 “The Lord will fulfill…”

Spend some time quietly turning these words over in your mind. Think of scriptures that use the word “fill”, “full” or “fulfill”. Meditate on the idea of fullness as it relates to who God is. What stories in the Bible can you think of which tell about God filling or completing something? What does this tell you about the God you serve?

In case you are having trouble here are some Biblical phrases to consider:

  1. “In the fullness of time.”
  2. “To fulfill all righteousness”
  3. “Be filled with the Spirit.”
  4. “That your joy may be full.”
  5. “In your presence is fullness of joy.”
  6. “That you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.”

God is the filler and the fulfiller. There is nothing skimpy or stingy about the nature of God. His plans for you never includes just getting by. Even in times of apparent lack his grace and power are more than abundant for every situation.  The great deception in the garden of Eden was when the serpent suggested that God was holding back something from Eve. This wicked lie still dampens the faith of many. They have bought into the idea that God lives in fear of our fullness and so holds back like a stingy miser. But even a casual look at the scriptures shows a God who fills the widows oil jar to overflowing, who makes the new wine at the wedding better than the former, and who has the disciples wearing themselves out carrying baskets of leftovers after the feeding of the five thousand.

He is the God who can do “exceedingly beyond all that we ask or imagine.” and who gives “good measure, pressed down, shaken together running over.” into the laps of those who live with the same generosity. Yes that’s right God is generous and calls us to be generous too if we would follow him. If we are asked to go one mile, we are commanded to generously go two. If we are sued for our coat we give even more besides. We can do this because we know our heavenly father is generous and can give us more than we ask or think. So why must we live with a clenched fist when our King is pleased to give us the kingdom?

Oh friend throw away your notion of a God who holds back. God always wants more for you than you want for yourself. The only limits are the limits of our faith and obedience. Remember this: “The Lord will fulfill..” Nothing less. (Have you figured out the verse yet?) More tomorrow.
