Rendering unto Caesar

In Matthew 22:21 Jesus Christ told his followers to give to Caesar (the government) what is justly due and give to God what is justly due.

The Tribute Money by Masaccio

In the fifth chapter of Acts, we see Christ’s followers being persecuted for preaching the Gospel, particularly preaching in Jesus Name. This brings to mind several modern lawsuits regarding the name of Christ in public schools and prayer at city council meetings.  Most gave in because of the misinterpretation of the First Amendment.  Yet, following the precedent set by Jesus himself, in Acts 5:29 we see Peter and the other Apostles declaring “We must obey God rather than men!”

Just before Thanksgiving, in the year of our Lord 2009, an ecumenical group of Christians drew a similar line in the sand as those first followers of Christ.  Over 150 Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders have signed the Manhattan Declaration, a pledge in defense of life, religious liberty and traditional marriage.

Here is a video interview between Mike Huckabee and Chuck Colson discussing the Manhattan Declaration, which is an official document composed by a group of Christain leaders that are uniting against causes such as abortion, gay marriage and others.

Here is the press release from…

The Manhattan Declaration
WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 20, 2009—Today a group of prominent Christian clergy, ministry leaders and scholars released the Manhattan Declaration, which addresses the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious liberty. The 4,700-word declaration issues a clarion call to Christians to adhere to their convictions and informs civil authorities that the signers will not—under any circumstance—abandon their Christian consciences. Drafted by Dr. Robert George, Dr. Timothy George and Chuck Colson and signed by more than 150 Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders, the Manhattan Declaration was made public at a noon ET press conference held in the Lisagor Room at the National Press Club.

Excerpts from the declaration include:

  • “We are Christians who have joined together across historic lines of ecclesial differences to affirm our right—and, more importantly, to embrace our obligation—to speak and act in defense of these truths. We pledge to each other, and to our fellow believers, that no power on earth, be it cultural or political, will intimidate us into silence or acquiescence.”
  • “We recognize the duty to comply with laws whether we happen to like them or not, unless the laws are gravely unjust or require those subject to them to do something unjust or otherwise immoral.”
  • “…We will not comply with any edict that purports to compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriage or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family.”

The authors and original signatories of the Manhattan Declaration are now inviting others who will agree to the pledge to sign the declaration as well.

As Colson told Huckabee, “If you continue to assault the family, continue to assault life, continue to assault our liberties, we will ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s, but under no circumstance will we render to Caesar what is God’s. So we have taken a very firm line. We’ve drawn a line, and we want true Christians to stand up and defend what we believe now.”

Now the question is… how many will sacrifice for the cause of Christ and how many will deny their faith?

Philip Johnson wrote: “Now… if we could just get the people sitting in the pews to stop having abortions, to keep from divorcing, and to start taking care of the elderly, maybe we would get somewhere. :)

We like to point our fingers at non-believers, but we are told that God’s people need to reform first. In addition to making this declaration to the non-believers, we need to alter the declarations that we have been making to our congregations!

Abortion, homosexuality, abandoning the elderly, etc, are symptoms and not the causes. Those symptoms are the result of selfishness (lovers of their own selves). For example, the same selfishness that causes non-believers to have abortions causes us to limit the number of our children. Apparently, we just happen to be better at using birth control. If non-believers could just get better at using birth control (so as not to need abortions), would we have nothing to complain about then?

Symptoms of selfishness that seem to be common in the pews are small family sizes, waiting longer to get married, more elderly in nursing homes, less family cohesiveness, more working mothers, etc.

Yes, I think that we should speak out. I have been arrested for civil disobedience before. But I most desire that… “God’s people shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

My good friend James A Looper responded: “I agree with Philip. There is a time for civil disobedience but if the people in the pews do not repent we are wasting our time.” James then suggested Christians read what Jonathan Edwards wrote:

Jonathan Edwards“At such a day as this, God especially calls his people to the exercise of extraordinary meekness and mutual forbearance. Christ appears, as it were, coming in his kingdom, which calls for great moderation in our behavior toward all men: “Let your moderation be known to all; the Lord is at hand” (Phil 4:5). The awe of the Divine Majesty, that appears present or approaching, should dispose us to this moderation and deter us from the contrary. For us to be judging one another and behaving with fierceness and bitterness toward one another, when he who is the Searcher of all hearts, to whom we must all give an account, appears so remarkably present, is exceedingly unsuitable. Our business at such a time at this should be at home, searching and condemning ourselves and taking heed to our own behavior. If there is glorious prosperity for the church of God approaching, those who are the most meek will have the largest share in it.”
Jonathan Edwards, Works, I:421.

Aborting America’s Blessings

In 1933 a godless atheistic religion called Secular Humanism was established in America. Among its anti-Christian tenets is one that sounds almost Christian. It is the 15th tenet of Humanist Manifesto I which states “We assert that humanism will: (a) affirm life rather than deny it; (b) seek to elicit the possibilities of life, not flee from them; and (c) endeavor to establish the conditions of a satisfactory life for all, not merely for the few. By this positive morale and intention humanism will be guided, and from this perspective and alignment the techniques and efforts of humanism will flow.” (Source: http://www.americanhumanist.org/Who_We_Are/About_Humanism/Humanist_Manifesto_I)

Oddly, but not surprisingly, this anti-christian religion begins with a distortion of reality, and in fact, it is what I consider “a down to earth lie.”   Secular Humanists do NOT affirm life, they do in fact seek to deny it through abortion. Today’s Secular Humanists are the loudest, most vocal supporters of abortion on earth. Here is a quote from a sample article supporting their anti-life agenda clothed in feigned American patriotism: “The Declaration of Independence asserts our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but conflicts between these rights are commonplace. The extreme pro-life, anti-abortion position states that if there’s a conflict between an embryo’s right to life and the liberty of adults, for instance a woman’s freedom to terminate pregnancy, life always trumps liberty.” (Read the entire story to fully comprehend the absurdity of their argument: http://thehumanist.org/humanist/ThomasClark.html).  However, all their arguments are more full of holes than Charlie Brown’s Halloween costume in “The Great Pumpkin.”

In 1973, forty years after Humanist Manifesto I, and in the same year as Roe Vs. Wade, Humanist Manifesto II emerges and it continues the distortion of the truth and throws in some contradictions for variety. The sixth tenet of Humanist Manifesto II states “In the area of sexuality, we believe that intolerant attitudes, often cultivated by orthodox religions and puritanical cultures, unduly repress sexual conduct. The right to birth control, abortion, and divorce should be recognized. While we do not approve of exploitive, denigrating forms of sexual expression, neither do we wish to prohibit, by law or social sanction, sexual behavior between consenting adults. The many varieties of sexual exploration should not in themselves be considered ‘evil.’ Without countenancing mindless permissiveness or unbridled promiscuity, a civilized society should be a tolerant one. Short of harming others or compelling them to do likewise, individuals should be permitted to express their sexual proclivities and pursue their lifestyles as they desire. We wish to cultivate the development of a responsible attitude toward sexuality, in which humans are not exploited as sexual objects, and in which intimacy, sensitivity, respect, and honesty in interpersonal relations are encouraged. Moral education for children and adults is an important way of developing awareness and sexual maturity.”

So, what do we see espoused here by the “moral” humanists? Let me list them as I read what they are saying to me.  They support: fornication, adultery, abortion, homosexuality, divorce, homosexual marriage, and alternate lifestyles of every flavor. It is amazing that in this context Secular Humanists can in the same breath speak of morality and a civilized society.  Can a society be either moral or civilized when these are the traits they seek to trumpet? My answer is no, it can be neither. Historically, these are signs of a civilization that is disintegrating. Ancient Greece and Rome are classic examples of societies that had degenerated into nothing but moral decadence. When societal mores dissolve, the culture and nation follow suit.

Secular Humanists speak of responsibility, personal liberty, freedom of choice and other nice sounding virtues. Contrary to their first manifesto (“establish the conditions of a satisfactory life for all, not merely for the few”), they choose to ignore the rights of all and choose to glorify the rights of millions of women who, through sexual immorality and/or lack of responsibility, conceive a child and then choose to destroy it through the violent ungodly act of abortion. Watch this video and choose for yourself how “moral” and “ethical” and “civilized” Secular Humanists are in supporting the destruction of the most innocent of human life. Remember that most of the women themselves are victims too due to misinformation regarding the violence they are inflicting on their unborn child. My hope is that this video will dispel that ignorance and reveal the truth. If you watch this and can still deny the existence of independent human life living and growing in a pregnant woman’s womb, you have that right, but you will move into a state of willful ignorance.

Watch this 27 minute video and then make an informed decision.

Abortion and the Bible

The following is excerpted from http://www.abortion-and-bible.com
This website is a great resource for anyone wanting to refute the nonsense arguments of abortionists and humanists.

PRO-”CHOICE” EXCUSES AND THE BIBLE’S ANSWERS

Pro-”choice” (pro-abortion) advocates give excuses in support of abortion. The Holy Bible clearly answers these excuses. Below are common excuses, followed by paraphrased verses from The Bible that counter the excuses.

EXCUSE– IT’S NOT MY PROBLEM.

  • Women: “I’ve never had an abortion. I’m not pregnant now.”
  • Men: “I’ve never caused a woman to have an unwanted pregnancy.”
  • Both: “Abortion isn’t my problem. It’s only a problem that a pregnant woman must solve. She must choose.”

BIBLE’S GUIDELINES:

  • Psalm 82:3-4 Defend the weak and the fatherless; maintain rights for the poor and oppressed; rescue the weak and needy, delivering them from the hand of wicked persons.
  • Proverbs 24:11-12. Rescue those being led to death and slaughter. If you claim ignorance of their deaths, God will know, and He will repay each person for what he or she has or has not done to help those in need.
  • Proverbs 31:8-9. Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves, defend those who cannot defend themselves, and plead the cause of those in need.
  • Isaiah 5:20. Woe to those who call evil good, or good evil; and those who put darkness for light, or light for darkness.
  • John 13:34. Jesus gave us a new commandment, that we love one another as He has loved us.
  • John 8:12. Jesus is the Light of the world, Who dispels the darkness of sin.
  • Matthew 5:14: Jesus’ followers are lights of the world, who dispel the darkness of sin.
  • Galatians 6:2. Bear each others’ burdens, thereby fulfilling the law of Christ.
  • EXCUSE– IT’S NOT A BABY; IT’S JUST TISSUE.

    • “The product growing in my womb is just cells or a blob of tissue, not a baby. I can have an abortion, since I’m not destroying a human being. That’s what the doctor and nurse at the abortion clinic told me, and they should know, shouldn’t they?”

    BIBLE’S GUIDELINES:

    • Genesis 1:26-28; 2:7: Mankind is created by God in His image, even carrying His eternal breath of life.
    • Exodus 21:22-23: The penalty under the law of Moses was to put to death a person who caused even the accidental death of an unborn baby (as by two men fighting).
    • Psalm 139:13-16: Each person is created by God, fearfully, marvelously, and wonderfully, and that person’s future is seen by the very eyes of God.
    • Isaiah 42:5 and Acts 17:25: The life and breath of people come from God.
    • Jeremiah 1:4-5: God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, even before his conception.
    • Isaiah 49:1, 5: God called Isaiah to be a prophet, even before his birth.
    • Genesis 25:22-23: God ordained a nation from Jacob (Jews) and a nation from Esau (Edomites, Arabs), while the twins were still in Rebekah’s womb.
    • Matthew 1:18, 22-23: God ordained that the Messiah, Jesus, would come from the womb of Mary, even before she conceived.
    • Luke 1:36: God ordained that John the Baptizer would be conceived in the womb of Elizabeth.

How Unbelief and Apathy destroys a society

In this brief clip from Dr. Francis Schaeffer’s, How Then Should We Live, he examines some of the fallicies that caused Rome to become defunct. We can all learn from history what NOT to do from the mistakes of others, and what we should be doing now from the example of the faithful of that day…

    De-nice gal | MySpace Video

Sadly, we are watching the United States, lead by Liberal Humanistic Socialists (mainly in the Democratic Party), but aided by Liberal Humanistic Socialists in the Republican Party, drive us down the same road to collapse that Rome followed.  The Secular Humanists have been very successful, using Public Education, in eradicating almost all historical references to our Christian heritage as Americans.  Humanistic groups like the ACLU have further tried to mask that historical heritage and prevent public evangelism in the USA by removing all outward expressions of the Christian faith. An example would be not allowing prayer in schools and banning praying in Jesus’ name in the military and in local government meetings, despite the Freedom of Religion clause granted in the Bill of Rights.

    Insult to Our Democracy

Rep. Jack Murtha presides, ignores reality to push through his preferences without a vote.  This shows just how “bipartisan” Democrats really are.  They do NOT care about their constituents or the Constitution.  They have a Socialist agenda and are determined to ram it through Congress despite what the American People want.

1948 Cartoon Needs to be Prime-time in 2009

Make mine freedom!  “This Cold War-era cartoon uses humor to tout the dangers of Communism and the benefits of capitalism.”  It is amazing how succinctly cartoonists can put things in perspective.  As we watch our Socialist Federal Government striving to destroy our economy and steal our freedoms, this little cartoon is a great reminder of what Pelosi, Reid and Obama are about to do to America.  This should be Prime-time on all networks.  Unfortunately the establishment media would never broadcast it.  So we post it here and ask you to share it with others.

    Global Warming: Science or Politics?

“On October 14, Lord Christopher Monckton gave a presentation in St. Paul, MN on the subject of global warming. In this 4-minute excerpt from his speech, he issues a dire warning to all Americans regarding the United Nations Climate Change Treaty that is scheduled to be signed in Copenhagen in December 2009.

A draft of the treaty can be read here.

Chuck Norris has an article in WorldNetDaily with a good analysis of the treaty.

There has been considerable debate raised about Monckton’s conclusion that the Copenhagen Treaty would cede US sovereignty. His comments appear to be based upon his interpretation of the The Supremacy Clause in the US Constitution (Article VI, paragraph 2). This clause establishes the Constitution, Federal Statutes, and U.S. TREATIES as the supreme law of the land. Concerns have been raised in the past that a particularly ambitious treaty may supersede the US Constitution. In the 1950s, a constitutional amendment, known as the Bricker Amendment, was proposed in response to such fears, but it failed to pass. You can read about the Bricker Amendment in a 1956 Time Magazine article.

Lord Monckton served as a policy adviser to Margaret Thatcher. He has repeatedly challenged Al Gore to a debate to which Gore has refused. Monckton sued to stop Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth” from being shown in British schools due to its inaccuracies. The judge found in-favor of Monckton, ordering 9 serious errors in the film to be corrected. Lord Monckton travels internationally in an attempt to educate the public about the myth of global warming.

UPDATE: Check-out this story from the 10/29/09 Wall Street Journal.”

    What Is Truth?

TruthDecayWhat Is Truth? Philosophers and theologians have asked this question for ages.  Satan’s first temptation to Eve, came in casting doubt on God’s truth.  Pilate asked Jesus that very question:

“Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Every one who is of the truth hears my voice.’ Pilate said to him, ‘What is truth?’” John 18:37, 38.

We hear politicians calling the President a liar.  Republicans call Democrats liars and vice versa.  Politicians broadcast “”facts” about healthcare reform, and then we find out these are fiction and not facts.   The Bible tells us that the Lord detests  lying (Proverbs 12:22)

Today we are bombarded by news outlets on radio, television, and the Internet. There was a time in my life when what you heard on TV news was considered the truth. That time has long passed. When I was in grade school, we used to read about citizens in Russia, China, and other countries run by totalitarian governments, being deceived by “propaganda.”  I used to wonder how people could be so blind as to not recognize it for what it was.  Today, I no longer wonder.  Our American culture is eat up with Secular Humanism and bombarded by propaganda on every side.

Watch this video and you may never watch the news in the same way!  It is part of a documentary called “How Then Shall We Live” by Dr. Francis Schaeffer. You can get this DVD in its entirety at http://www.theapologeticsgroup.com.

What is the real root of Truth and of Lies?  We can find out in God’s Word:

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; . . . For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:14, 17.

“Why do you not understand what I say? . . . you are of your father the devil. . . . He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:43, 44.

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.’” JOHN 14:6.

“He who does what is true, comes to the light.” John 3:21.

“And I will pray the Father, and he will give you . . .the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; you know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you.” JOHN 14:16, 17.

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13.

“Let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God; for God is love.” I John 4:7, 8.

“Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in Him, ‘If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’” John 8:31, 32.

    You Might Be A Constitutionalist If . . .

    By Chuck Baldwin

    October 20, 2009

US ConstitutionI originally published this column back in January of 2005. Since then (and especially lately), many people have called and written with requests to republish it. So, with a few minor revisions, here it is.

More than thirty years as a student of American history, constitutional government, and the Holy Bible leads me to the conviction that the two major political parties in this country (at the national level) are equally culpable in stripping America of its founding principles. In my opinion, both the Democrat and Republican parties in Washington, D.C., have zero fidelity to the U.S. Constitution and zero respect for America’s foundational precepts.

In my studied opinion, neither the Democrat nor Republican Party (at the national level) has any intention of slowing the out-of-control expansion of government. Neither party has demonstrated any loyalty to preserving and protecting our constitutional form of government.

Like National Socialists and Soviet Socialists of old, the only thing that concerns Democrats and Republicans today is who is in power. Both are equally willing to destroy the freedoms and liberties of people without conscience or regret as long as their party remains in control.

I am absolutely convinced that without a renewed allegiance to constitutional government and State sovereignty, there can be no resolution to America’s current slide into socialism and oppression. Therefore, it is critical that we cast aside our infatuation with partisan politics and steadfastly stand firm for the principles of federalism and freedom, as did America’s founders.

Might you be a modern-day Minuteman who understands the principles of freedom and federalism? I offer the following test. Read it and see if you, too, are a Constitutionalist. (Yes, Martha, this is another Jeff Foxworthy spin-off.)

    1. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that every congressman, senator, President, and Supreme Court justice is required to obey the U.S. Constitution.
    2. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that before the United States invades and occupies another country, Congress must first declare war.
    3. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe the federal government should live within its means, like everyone else is forced to do.
    4. You might be a Constitutionalist if you think that taking away people’s liberties in the name of security is not patriotic, nor does it make the country more secure.
    5. You might be a Constitutionalist if you would like to see politicians be forced to abide by the same laws they make everyone else submit to.
    6. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that we have three “separate but equal” branches of government that are supposed to hold each other in check and balance.
    7. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the federal government has no authority to be involved in education or law enforcement, or in any other issue that the Tenth Amendment reserves to the States, or to the People.
    8. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that gun control laws do nothing but aid and abet criminals while trampling the rights and freedoms of law-abiding citizens.
    9. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the income tax is both unconstitutional and immoral, and, along with the I.R.S. and the Federal Reserve, should be abolished.
    10. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe the federal government had no authority to tell former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore that he could not display a monument containing the Ten Commandments in the Alabama Judicial Building in Montgomery; or to tell a Pace, Florida, high school principal that he could not pray before a meal.
    11. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that Congress or the White House or any sovereign State is not required to submit to unconstitutional Supreme Court rulings.
    12. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that freedom has nothing in common with illegal immigration.
    13. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that outsourcing American jobs overseas is not good for America.
    14. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the United States should get out of the United Nations and get the United Nations out of the United States.
    15. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that it is not unconstitutional for children in public schools to pray or read the Bible.
    16. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the Boy Scouts are not a threat to America.
    17. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the federal government should honor its commitments to America’s veterans and stop using U.S. military personnel as guinea pigs for testing drugs and chemicals.
    18. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that U.S. troops should never serve under foreign commanders or wear the uniform or insignia of the United Nations, and that they must never submit to illegal orders, such as turning their weapons against American citizens, or confiscating the guns of U.S. citizens.
    19. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that the federal government has no business bribing churches and faith-based organizations with federal tax dollars.
    20. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that federal agents who murder American citizens should be held to the same laws and punishments that any other citizen would be held to. (Can anyone say, “Waco” and “Ruby Ridge”?)
    21. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that NAFTA, GATT, the WTO, and the FTAA (and similar agreements) are disastrous compromises of America’s national sovereignty and independence.
    22. You might be a Constitutionalist if you would like to see congressmen and senators be required to actually read a bill before passing it into law.
    23. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that it is the job of government to protect and secure God-given rights, not use its power to take those rights away.
    24. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that there is nothing unconstitutional about the public acknowledgement of God and our Christian heritage.
    25. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that government bailouts and “stimulus” expenditures defy virtually every principle of free enterprise and are a flagrant leap into socialism.
    26. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that airport screeners have no business touching women’s breasts, using sophisticated machinery to look through passengers’ clothing to see their naked bodies, confiscating fingernail clippers, or denying pilots from carrying handguns.
    27. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that many public schools’ “zero-tolerance” policies are just plain stupid.
    28. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that parents have a right to homeschool their children.
    29. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that governmental seizure of private property is plain, old-fashioned thievery.
    30. You might be a Constitutionalist if you are personally determined to not submit to any kind of forced vaccination.
    31. You might be a Constitutionalist if you oppose any kind of national health insurance.
    32. You might be a Constitutionalist if you believe that U.S. troops are not the world’s policemen, that they are not “nation-builders,” and that their purpose is only to defend American lives and property, not to be the enforcement arm of international commercial interests or global elitists.
    33. You might be a Constitutionalist if you understand that the county Sheriff is the highest law enforcement officer of his district and that federal law enforcement (much of which is unconstitutionally organized, anyway) is obligated to submit to his authority.
    34. You might be a Constitutionalist if you are determined to oppose America’s merger with any kind of regional, hemispheric, or international government, such as the North American Union.
    35. You might be a Constitutionalist if you oppose sending billions of taxpayer dollars as foreign aid; the U.S. State Department meddling into the private affairs of foreign countries; and ubiquitous foreign entanglements that require vast sums of money, create animosity and hostility towards us, and expose us to foreign wars and conflicts in which we have no national interest.
    36. You might be a Constitutionalist if you would like to meet one single congressman or senator besides Ron Paul who acts as if he or she has ever read the U.S. Constitution.

Well, how did you fare? Are you a Constitutionalist? If so, your country desperately needs you to stand up and fight for freedom’s principles before they are forever taken from us. This means never again voting for anyone–from any party–who will not preserve, protect, and defend the U.S.
Constitution. So, don’t just take the test; make the pledge!
